Make sure you choose the right rod for your type of fishing. If you choose a heavy rod for a very light bait or an ultra light rod for a heavy bait it will be very hard mission for you to throw the bait and you may also harm your equipment while doing so. Make sure to match it to the type of fishing you are planing on doing.
Beginners usually tend to buy fishing lines a bit heaver then what they should. It look stronger but not always and even if it does it's not better, especially if you don't need it. Try getting a strong enough line for your targeted fish, area of fishing rod and reel.
Live worms are a good bait you can start with usually. When your out of live baits you can try spinners and fake lures like worms and small fish lures.
Normally you will hear pepople going fishing very early in the morning or at the evening just before sundown - these are the best times of the day to go fishing. Also the tide times are playing a big role when before and after a high tide is also a great time to go fishing.
Remember that it's not how far you can throw it's where you throw. Learn to throw where you meant. Every time you toss your line try to get to a specific location so that you will be able to aim better each time.
Always stay alert! Look at the water and explore potential spot for fishing, think where is the best place for them to get food, where are the big fish or the small fish that the big fish is after
