I need to think about cardboard among man's inventions that transformed the entire world. This is mainly used for boxes or greeting cards, book covers or as construction materials. With the inception of eco-friendly boxes, this has become an important component for homemade composts.

Inventive individuals have taken innovation up a higher notch. 50-year-old Israeli engineer, Izhar Gafni, who designs mass-production machines is but one good example of taking the ante up an additional level. A fully functional and running bicycle that is 90 percent made of cardboard is his latest invention.

Gafni's fascination of applying unconventional materials and technologies to everyday things is commenced by the creation of his cardboard bike. The bike was completed a total of four years of perfecting and reinforcing weak structural points of corrugated cardboard. He was able to overcome the challenge by finding the right way to fold and cut pieces of cardboard to achieve the correct level of structural integrity. It took another one and a half years of testing and failure until he ultimately got it right.

Gafni was able to strengthen the cardboard after learning the techniques of folding and cutting it the right way. The cardboard bike can carry and support the full weight of an average person. Gafni made a secret blend of organic substances to coat the cardboard bike with to prevent it from getting wet. The cardboard bike is then coated with lacquer paint to add a hint of tint to it.

Currently, the bike is comprised of 80% cardboard. The other 20 percent (e.g. the suspension system, pedal bearings, chain, and brake mechanisms) consists of metal parts. Gafni, however, is working on making the bike all cardboard, but patent issues are preventing him from mass-producing these.

Making the bike 100% cardboard is what Gafni is currently striving to achieve, however patent issues are preventing him from mass-producing these.

As a cyclist himself, Gafni owns top of the line bikes, each amounting to thousands of dollars each. A prototype of the cardboard bike only cost over USD 9. Thus, the bike would only cost to about USD 20 when mass produced.

Gafni's business partner, Nimrod Elmish, is optimistic about the success of the cardboard bike. He stated that using the recyclable, affordable, easily obtained material from cardboard boxes for moving, illustration boards, greeting cards, and other sources can trigger a positive, major change in present production norms.Using recycled cardboard boxes can trigger a major, positive change in present times production practices. For example, because the materials used are recyclable and environmentally friendly, the companies manufacturing the cardboard bike will be granted rebates and tax benefits by the government. Since production is planned to be automated, pensioners and the differently-abled can be employed for the production line. These tax grants could further lower down production costs, making the bikes cost even lesser.

You never know? At some point, you might order today cardboard boxes, give these to the business after using them then observe them be transformed into sturdy, modern bikes.
