Christy Mathewson Dominated The Game

Christy Mathewson was a professional baseball player who was one of the top pitchers of his era. He played professional baseball for the New York Giants and had a brief stint with the Cincinnati Reds from 1900-1916. He was one of the original players elected in to the first Hall of Fame ceremonies in 1936.

The years that Mathewson pitched was known as the deadball era. During this time pitchers dominated the game and home run leaders for those season often had under ten home runs. It was considered the deadball era until the power hitter term was established in 1919 when Babe Ruth hit a league leading 29 home runs which was an amazing feat at the time.

Hall of Fame pitcher Mathewson is considered to be one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He left his name in many places in the baseball history book due to his many feats during his career. He ended his career with 373 wins, a 2.13 career earned run average, 79 shutouts, 435 complete games and 2 no-hitters.

He is on the all time top 10 list in wins, shutouts and earned run average which is quite a feat considering how long it has been since he retired. He was a consistent 20 game winner during his career as he won 20 games 13 times. To make things even more impressive he won 30 games four times. His best being in 1908 when he went 37-11.

The 1908 season was probably his best season. Besides his 37-11 record he also appeared in 56 games, had 34 complete games, 11 shutouts and had 259 strikeouts. If 1908 was not his best season it had to be 1905 when Mathewson led his Giants to a World Series victory over the Philadelphia Athletics. During that World Series Mathewson threw three shutout games including the championship clincher.

His first season with the Giants was a disappointment. Christy went 0-3 and the Giants got rid of him and wanted their money back. The Reds saw something in him and added him tot their roster but then quickly traded him to the Giants where he would spend the majority of this playing days.

Due to religious beliefs Christy Mathewson refused to play baseball on a Sunday. This was hardly a problem for the Giants though as during those days most states did not let teams play baseball anyways. After his playing days Mathewson coached the Reds for awhile.
