As far as sports go, BJJ has taken its place among the most enjoyable ones out there. Basically, it is a martial art; therefore, it is highly combative. Learning this sport can bring all sorts of excitement and fun to those who decide to take it up. An added plus is having the pride of wearing a BJJ GI. There may be times when you find yourself encountering less than desirable characters or people. If you knew BJJ, you will be more able to defend and protect yourself. It is also very handy when dealing with thieves and robbers who make the mistake of breaking into your home. Many people have to venture out into dangerous territories and shady alleys. Knowing the dangers that lurk in these shadowy places, they decide to learn this sport.

There is no reason why you shouldn't also give this art a shot. But you should expect having to face several advantages and disadvantages when you take up this sport ' or any sport, for that matter. Health considerations have to be factored in when we speak of BJJ. Health risks come with the territory, even with a fun and wonderful sport such as BJJ. It is only wise that you be informed of these risks before you go off and concentrate on learning all you could about this art. This article has been written with the hopes of preparing you for that probability. After all, the more you know the moment you put on that BJJ GI, the more prepared you will be when you start getting serious with your training. This includes skin disorders and cauliflower ear problems.

When you are performing this art, you will mainly be using your head to attack the opponent. One need only look at various television shows and some actual matches to find the head getting much of the brunt of the attacks. It is important that you be careful whenever you find yourself having to face an opponent. If you do not learn the art properly or if you perform the art in the wrong manner, you can even lose your sense of hearing. You could be dealing with some ear damage, and swelling is only one of them. The swollen ear cartilage could become separated away from the perichondrium. The perichondrium is a highly important part of the ear. The perichondrium pretty much provides much of the nutrients needed by the ear cartilage.

Sometimes this region can become completely swollen in a permanent fashion. If you see this happening, you can be sure that things are bound to be serious. A definite name for this is cauliflower ear formation. You can expect to be saddled with this condition for the rest of your life. Using protective gear over your head while wearing your BJJ GI will go a long way in preventing cauliflower ear formation from happening. If you're looking for skull protection, this is your best option. In addition, you will also have to contend with health issues concerning the dermal area.

Prolonged practice of BJJ is also bound to put a lot of strain to the muscles, to the extent that the strain could only be described as severe. But your greatest worry would have to do with skin problems. Since the nature of the sport involves skin contact, too much of it could likely result to skin abrasions. Unclean mats and unwashed BJJ GI used in BJJ could also be the cause of serious skin problems, not to mention the unhygienic practices of some practitioners. Cases of ringworm, staph, and herpes infection could also happen, albeit rarely. BJJ is surely a fantastic art, but you need to understand the risk of practicing it.
