Every day I step out of my house and look out upon the world as it is meant to be. The trees are lush, green, and full of life. There is signs of game that have passed by so close to my house, that I could hit them with a thrown rock. I am a hunter and I know my woods like the back of my hand. Because of this intimate knowledge, I know most every wood to a certain degree. I forest, I hunt, I provide, and I teach.
While we continuously tear nature down and build humanity up, there will always be great swathes of forest for man to get lost in. While people can certainly get lost in a literal sense, it is important to remember that we can also get lost in a spiritual sense. There is no place where a human can connect to their inner selves more profoundly than within the depths of a forest.
Do we really want to become completely reliant on others for our basic necessities? As a hunter and a forester, I am capable of supplying all of the basic needs of myself and my family. I can feed them, I can build them a home, and I can protect them from harm within an environment most people would feel helpless in. If you can't provide for your loved ones by yourself, then you are neglecting your duties as a man.
What about the traditional values that the skills and knowledge of foresting instill? We have these values to thank for the America we know today. The people that blazed a trail for the settlers behind them were all adventurers who understood the laws of nature and how to tame it. Great men whose skills of tracking, hunting, and trailblazing were indispensable for creating this untamed land. How could we turn our backs on that?
I do a lot to keep these hunting traditions alive in my family. I teach my sons and daughter everything that was taught to me by my father. I make certain that nature is respected in my household, and that bringing down wild game is never to be done just "for fun." I wear hunting and game shirts proudly around town. These are things that are important to me, and I urge you to make them important to yourself as well.
