We are all familiar with the regular set up on most bikes, fixie or not. The chain will go around the sprocket set on the rear wheel and pushes you forward. This really is usually the case, even if you own a fixed bike. Its just you must pedal even harder. This is the reason a flip flop hubis generally such a revelation in the proper hands. So what is it and why is it so helpful?
Well normally the single sprocket drive set on a fixie rear rim is everything you have. Pedal even harder or more quickly to go up a steep slope or to manage the descent. That is great for the majority of fixed gear owners. But at times you might actually wish for a rest or even some assistance riding up the larger inclines. It will take time to master a fixie and to improve your endurance. So a flip flop hubis the answer to the problem.
How it works is that on the opposite side of the standard sprocket, you put either a second sprocket or a freewheel unit. It means that you can switch the rim around to change the gearing or to permit coasting also. You may have several combinations either higher or lower to fit where you are heading and the way you want to do it.
So a flip flop hubis certainly an added bit of versatility to your fixed gear bike, without compromising on principles. Sure you may effectively 'change' gear but all that you are doing is making a change from one fixed gear to another fixed gear.
You eliminate none of the purity of fixed gear bike riding or the contact with the street that is so unique. But it definitely could open up all sorts of new opportunities and challenges which you never thought possible without it. Hail to the hub is what I say.
