Road cycling, also known as road biking is the most popular form of cycling among bicycle users. There are a number of reasons as to why it continues to interest many. Apart from racing, for which it is best known, it may also be done as a leisure activity, to commute, to and to deliver messages. Although the use of the bicycle had reduced to some extent in recent decades, aggressive environmental conservation campaigns will no doubt rejuvenate it.

There are many bicycle types that are used depending on the specific objective to be achieved. Examples include racing, touring, recumbent and BMX bicycles. Improvements continue to be made on the older models so that to give the rider more speed and comfort. By placing the handlebars a little lower in relation to the saddle, the rider is given a better aerodynamic position. Tires are designed to reduce rolling resistance by exerting high pressure.

Mountain bikes are a popular choice for many cyclists. Most have slick tires which help them to achieve great speeds. They allow the rider to assume an upright position which gives them a better view of oncoming traffic. While they may not be the most efficient for racing, for example, they can be fitted with several accessories such as cargo racks and mudguards.

The traffic rules that apply to other road users such as motorists also apply to cyclists. It is important that riders are attentive while on the road. They may be difficult to see particularly when at the side of the road. For this reason they are advised to have bright, reflective colors that will help other road users to notice them.

As a sport, the race is held on regular roads or those that are specially paved. Except for the handicap races, riders usually start simultaneously. The first rider to get to the finish line at the end of the course is declared the winner. Individual and team trials are other kinds of races that exist. On an international scale, major races include, the Olympics, world cycling championships and the commonwealth games among others.

Races may be held over one day or several days. Single day races range between a few kilometers to more than 200. Depending on the distance, they may either comprise a continuous stretch or several laps in a circuit. Sometimes, both are combined. Ultra marathons are races that last several days and consist of a number of a single stage.

There are a number of tactics that may be employed by riders during competitions. One of such tactics is known as drafting. This refers to the act of one rider closely following the one in front. This greatly reduces the resistance against which one has to ride and as a result, saves them a lot of energy. It may be utilized by a one team in attempt to beat competitors. The leading rider is used to give advantage to the following pack. Another tactic that may be used is known as a break. A small group of riders decide to separate from the main group and work together only to sprint towards the end of the race.

Road cycling is best enjoyed during the summer and spring seasons. Organizers ensure that the course has many climbs and descents to make it more selective. Experienced cyclists will break away during the climbs so that they have an advantage during the descents as single riders.
