The word "football" means different things to people for different parts of the world. In many nations around the world, this term means a sport played with a round ball which is kicked around. This game is called soccer in the United States. In the United States, the term means American football, which is a sport played with an elongated ball, which, for most of the game, is thrown by hand rather than kicked. This is not consistent with the name of the game, but there you have it. American football (hereinafter just "football" in this article) is a game played between two teams of eleven athletes.

The football field stretches 109.7 meters by 48.8 meters with an end zone for each team. The goal of football is to further the ball into the opposing team's end zone. The ball is furthered by running with it or by throwing it to another player on the team.

While football exists in high school and college, professional football creates the most excitement amongst sports fans. Professional football is played under the auspices of the National Football League. The National Football League is made up of two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).

Beginning with the year 2002, the NFL follows this schedule annually: an exhibition season (also known as a preseason which is played mainly in August and comprises of 4 games; a regular season from September through December, and which comprises of 16 games; and the playoffs beginning in January. The end of the season is the Super Bowl in early February.

During the payoffs, 6 teams from each of these conferences play against each other to determine a champion for the NFC and one for the AFC. The AFC and NFC champions then are pitted against each other in the final extravaganza - the Superbowl. The Superbowl is one of the most watched events on television in the United States.
